FAQ

  • What kittens/cats are currently available for adoption?

The kittens and cats we have available for adoption at our cattery changes frequently with new litters being born and reserves/adoptions taking place.  For the most up to date information on what kittens and cats are available please visit our Available Kittens page.

  • How much is the holding/reserve fee?

The holding fee is 25% of the price of the kitten.  The balance is due when the kitten is picked up or 7 days prior to a kitten being delivered.

  • What age can the kitten come home with me?

The kitten will be ready to leave our cattery once all vaccines and dewormers have been completed. This means the kitten will typically be around 14 to 16 weeks of age.

  • Will my kitten come with a health guarantee?

Yes! The kitten will have a three (3) year congenital health guarantee against genetic defects which will (or have) resulted in loss of life.

Sphynx kittens will also have a limited lifetime HCM guarantee/replacement.

More details regarding our health guarantees can be found in the adoption contract which will be provided prior to a reservation fee being collected.

  • What should I feed my new kitten?

Cats are obligate carnivores which means they require a meat-based diet in order to thrive.

A complete raw meat diet is ideal. However, if that is not an option for you, quality canned wet food is the second best option.

Providing your cat with only a dry/kibble food diet can be detrimental to their health and longevity. Kibble is low in moisture content, typically high in carbohydrates, often baked with many preservatives to give it a long shelf life - and if that isn't enough- many have their main source of protein from plants (rather than animal/meat sources). This does not mean all dry/kibble foods are bad!  Just be selective and supplement with a quality wet or raw offering.

At our cattery, our kittens/cats get to try many different types of food - raw, wet, as well as dry/kibble. We want to ensure the food(s) you choose for them will be well accepted and the transition to your home and your food choices go smoothly.

  • Do you have a contract to adopt a kitten?

Yes. An adoption contract will be provided and must be signed prior to a holding fee being accepted.   All kitten/cat adoptions start with the Kitten Inquiry form so please complete and submit that so we can build your kitten profile and find you the perfect feline friend for you and your family.

  • Is a Munchkin cat able to jump up onto counters or tables?

This is probably one of the most frequent questions asked about munchkin cats - aka - "I love cats, but don't really want one jumping onto my table or kitchen counter."

Truth:  There is no guarantee a munchkin, even with short itty-bitty legs, won't find it's way onto your table or kitchen counter.  That said, our munchkins have not yet jumped from-the-floor up onto the dinning room table or kitchen counters...they are however quite savvy at finding ways (and objects) to aid in their quest to reach higher ground.

Most cats like high places, and munchkins are no different.  If you're looking to keep your cat off counters (or other places you deem undesirable) your best bet is to create several areas in your home that they can climb to their heart's desire.  Make sure these areas are right in the mix of where you and your family spend most of your time - places in your household that your cat can feel part of the action!

  • I want a Munchkin, but I have a cat that has regular/long legs. Will they get along and play with one another?

Another very common question asked about munchkin cats - aka - "Can they befriend and play with another cat that isn't a munchkin?"

ABSOLUTELY!  These cats may be short in stature, but they are HUGE in personality.  These little guys don't miss a beat when it comes to playing and getting into the mix of things.  In fact, they often initiate play with anyone and anything willing! Just wait till you see one in total play mode and do a 'Tokyo drift' around corners!

If you're not already in love, you will be.

  • Do Sphynx cats require a lot of maintenance?

Sphynx need regular grooming/maintenance, just like haired cats.

Their nails must be clipped as well as their nail beds cleaned, their ears must be cleaned regularly (we advise weekly) to prevent wax and dirt buildup, and they should be bathed occasionally.

How often is occasionally? You'll likely read a lot of differing information (some people say as frequent as weekly), but we've found with our adult cats here in our cattery that about once a month is sufficient. We've also found a correlation between bathing frequency and the type of litter you choose for your litter boxes -  clay/clumping vs. wood pellets. We use both here at Sarec's Cattery and can share with you why and where we place each litter type.

Now kittens, they typically require a bath a bit more frequently because they seem to find any and all ways to get dirty!  That said, every kitten/cat is different and we can discuss the needs of yours prior to the time of adoption.

All of our Sphynx cats/kittens are used to our 'maintenance routine' so if you are a bit shy about "bathing a cat", no need to worry! As part of your Sphynx adoption package we provide "bathing goodies" - some tried and true items we believe make the whole experience easier (dare we say enjoyable?). Also, if you're picking up your new feline friend at our cattery location, we'd love to show you how it's all done.

  • Are Sphynx cats hypoallergenic?

No matter what you may have heard or read online, Sphynx cats are not completely hypoallergenic - even with their lack of fur.  In fact, no breed of cat is considered to be 100% hypoallergenic.

Does this mean if you're allergic to cats your hopes of having a feline companion is hopeless? Absolutely not!

Sphynx tend to be less likely to trigger allergy symptoms than other breeds of cats with fur, but there are a couple factors at play that determine if your specific allergy will be triggered by a Sphynx. If you have allergy concerns, please reach out to us on our Contact Us page and we can discuss your individual needs.

  • Do you ship/deliver your kittens?

We do!  We ship kittens within the US - either accompanied by one of the owners of our cattery, or with a flight nanny/courier service. We will not ship kittens/cats unaccompanied and/or transport them in cargo.

  • What happens if I can't keep the cat/kitten I've adopted?

Before you adopt any cat/kitten, you should do research to ensure the breed you have chosen is right for you and your family and that you have the full intention to be the cat's forever home. However, we do understand that things outside of your control can happen and you may no longer be able to provide care for your cat.

If you are unable to care for a cat you adopted from us, we welcome the cat back to our cattery.

Any type of refund for surrendering the cat back to our cattery is not guaranteed.   More details regarding the surrender of a kitten/cat is available in our adoption contract.

  • Do we sell cats with breeding rights?

Very unlikely. However, if you are a breeder or are interested in becoming a breeder, we are open to discussion.  Send us a message through our Contact Us page.

  • What is the best way to contact us?

Please send us a message through our Contact Us page.   If you are unable to use the Contact Us page you can send us an email directly at sarecscattery@gmail.com.
